Biography

I received B.S degree in 1997 and the Ph.D. degree in 2001 in Engineering Science from Osaka University.
Since 2001, I had worked for Professor Katsushi Ikeuchi Lab. in Institute of Industrial Science, University of Tokyo as a postdoctoral researcher.
Since 2003, I have been working for Cybermedia Center, Osaka University.

My research area includes computer vision (CV), robotics and computer graphics.
In particular, my main interest is observing and understanding human motions such as,

  • Tracking people from image sequence
  • Analysis of human motion using motion capture
  • Generating human motion using motion capture data and other signals
  • Humanoid robots
  • Markerless motion capture
  • Analysis of eye reflection imaging for the purpose of eye gaze tracking and further applications

During 2001 to 2003, I was working for the project of Digital Modeling of Cultural Heritages at Professor Katsushi Ikeuchi Lab. We have modeled Japanese Great Buddhas, Thailand Buddha and Bayon Temple at Cambodia Angkor Historical Site.

At the same time, we have captured Japanese folk dance master's motion using motion capture system and interpret the motion to human-sized biped robot HRP-2S as a part of the research project about digital modeling of Intangible Cultural Assets.

From Jun.2007 to 2008, I visited Georgia Institute of Technology (GaTech), GVU Center, as a visiting researcher, and worked with Matt Flagg, Prof. James M Rehg and Irfan Essa. In Jan.2010, I was a visiting professor at Carnegie Mellon University, Robotics Institute.
From Oct.2011, I'm awarded PRESTO(Precursory Research for Embryonic Science and Technology), JST (Japan Science and Technology Agency) and become a researcher of this program.

Contributions for Research Communities.

  • Associate Editor: International Conf. on Robotics and Automation (ICRA), 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010.
  • Reviewer: International Conf. on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition (CVPR2004, 2005, 2006)
  • Editor: The Institute of Image Information and Television Engineers (ITE)
